An awesome, unique, eco-friendly house located on the outskirts of Aptera (Megala Chorafia), only in 15 minutes driving distance to Chania center. It offers great, panoramic views to the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) and the local green countryside. Its style is modern, designed by its owner who is an artist and architect, but the layout has influences from the older traditional Cretan houses of Crete.

The area is tranquil but the village center with its tavernas and mini-markets is only 10 minutes walk away. Also, the small and clear Kalami beach is in 1,5km distance and the bigger village of Kalyves, with its sandy beach and all the amenities (post office, bank, restaurants, cafes, beach bars, gym, super-market, doctors, pharmacies) is only 4 km away.

The house has a unique layout, referring to the older houses, with an atrium/courtyard as a central spot and the main house built around it. That ensures plenty of sunlight and fresh air as well as available space for coffee breaks or dinners outdoors.

As you enter the house, you see a large front lobby with a storage room.  You are walking through it and you get into the main house, specifically into the dining room, which leads off to a part covered courtyard.  Off the dining room to the right is the fully fitted kitchen with  a breakfast bar.  A wood burning stove is placed at the base of the atrium providing additional heating for both the dining room and the lounge.  Walking up a few steps you enter the lounge area, from where you have access to two terraces. A small one just for admiring the view and the main terrace which is more like an outdoors living area with its pergola, and offers two distinct sitting areas and 180 ° panoramic views to the majestic the mountain range of the “Lefka Ori” and to the different area villages.

From the atrium you get the access to the bedrooms, on the lower level, a door is leading you to the lower terraced garden, with its own ‘paths’ to different section.  The main bedroom has a large bathroom with a walk in shower and the second double bedroom has a smaller bathroom with a shower cabin.

There is a study/studio with a mezzanine bedroom and a bathroom with a separate entrance that makes it ideal to be used as a guest room.

This eco house is built with a timber frame and traditional clay brick walls.  In order to obtain the Mediterranean character, the exterior walls have a plastered outer skin, on cement-bonded fiber lightweight boards.

From this splendid height, overlooking the mouth of Souda Bay and across to the Akrotiri peninsula is the village and ancient site of Aptera. Aptera from the fifth century BC into early Christian times was one of the most important cities. The Ministry of Culture has in recent years, spent a lot of time and money in making it easier to navigate and with better signage. The village itself has several good tavernas.
